What is the difference between Motorization and Automation?

While you can have motorization without automation, you cannot have automation without motorization.  All the window treatments listed above can be motorized and operated with the push of a button – but someone still has to make the decision to push the button!  When motorized window treatments are automated, their respective functions are predetermined by integration into an intelligent building automation system or simple devices that make functional decisions on the occupants behalf. Shades can be automatically triggered when sunlight shines through windows; at times when privacy or room darkening is required; to help control temperature; and there are a number of simple and inexpensive ways to send these commands automatically. While it is common to integrate your shades into building automation systems like Savant, Control 4, Crestron, Lutron, and others, you can also use very simple, stand-alone controls that solely operate your window treatments – it’s very simple!
Think of it this way, when you want your home or office to maintain a constant predetermined temperature, you would not sit and watch a thermometer and then go adjust your HVAC system whenever the building’s temperature changes – you simply tell your thermostat to do the work for you!  You can apply that logic in operating your window coverings too.
